The 50’s were a turbulent time for many in the United States and the country was actually divided over racial problems. Rock and roll was the music that brought many people, of all colours, together and united. People sensed equality in rock and roll and the many black rock and roll artists helped this divide to break down once and for all.

Rock and roll soon became popular for black and white young teens and adults and soon the country, and the world, was gripped. Chuck Berry helped the divide by being one of the first popular black artists that brought people of different colours, races and ages together.

Bill Haley released a song called Rock Around the Clock in 1955; it was then that the world heard a new rock and roll. Bill Haley and the comets became a sensation and created a thrill in dance and music audiences all over the world.

Other famous artists in this time period in rock and roll were Elvis Presley, Little Richard and Buddy Holly. Their stories in the history of rock and roll are very, very different. However, one thing remains the same; they created a new rock and roll and took it to a new and exciting level.

Rock and roll was broadcast all over the world thanks to television and new technology in the recording studios. It changed in the late 50’s due to the loss of Elvis to the army and the death of Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper in a plane crash.
